Here's how to keep it fun & festive

For students staying in halls at the University of Nottingham over the winter break, the season doesn’t have to feel quiet or lonely. Nottingham offers plenty of festive and fun activities to keep you entertained, whether you want to explore the city or enjoy cosy experiences right on campus. Here are some great ways to make the most of your winter break.

Festive fun in Nottingham city centre

  1. Visit the Winter Wonderland: Nottingham’s Winter Wonderland is a must-visit during the festive season. Located in Old Market Square, this magical event features festive food stalls, mulled wine, and a chance to get some Christmas goodies. Even if you’re not in the mood for shopping, wandering through the twinkling lights and lively atmosphere is sure to get you in the festive spirit.
  2. Catch a pantomime or theatre show: Nottingham is home to fantastic theatre venues like the Theatre Royal and Nottingham Playhouse. Over the winter break, they often host family-friendly pantomimes and Christmas-themed shows that are bound to get you in the festive spirit.
  3. Re-explore Nottingham’s historic sites: Winter is the perfect time to delve back into some of Notttingham's hot tourist spots as they are usually holding special events & promotions over the festive period. Wrap up and visit the iconic Nottingham Castle or take a tour of the City of Caves.
  4. Go ice skating: If you’re up for some active fun, lace up your skates and head to the National Ice Centre in the city. Whether you’re a pro or a beginner, skating is a fun way to spend a winter afternoon (you can also skate at the Winter Wonderland).

Things to do on campus and in halls

  1. Host a movie marathon: Gather friends who are also staying in halls and organise a cosy movie marathon. Pick a festive theme or revisit some classic films. (it's never too soon to watch the LOTR trilogy again). Make it even better with homemade hot chocolate and snacks.
  2. Cook a festive meal together: Use the downtime to experiment with cooking. Gather your flatmates and try making a group meal - whether it’s a traditional roast, a vegetarian feast, or even a themed dinner from your home country. It’s a great way to bond and share cultures.
  3. Go on a winter walk: We're lucky to have beautiful campus grounds that are worth exploring, even in winter. Take a brisk walk around Highfields Park or the lakeside trails to enjoy some fresh air and clear your mind.
  4. Organise games nights: Dust off board games or card games and host a flat games night. If you’re feeling creative, turn it into a mini-tournament with prizes like snacks or festive treats.
  5. Get involved with ResLife events: We'll be hosting plenty of events in December so if you want to get out and meet new people who are also staying in halls then this is the perfect opportunity!

Budget-friendly activities

  1. Go on a coffee crawl: Nottingham has plenty of cosy independent cafés, perfect for escaping the winter chill. Grab a book or your laptop and enjoy the relaxing vibe with a warm drink in hand.
  2. Explore Wollaton Park: Wollaton Park, home to the stunning Wollaton Hall (aka Wayne Manor from The Dark Knight Rises), is a short trip from campus. Take a winter walk, spot the deer, and enjoy the scenic beauty for free.
  3. Try a DIY arts and crafts session: Use leftover supplies to create DIY decorations, cards, or even some handmade gifts. It’s a fun and productive way to spend time indoors without spending money.

With a mix of festive activities, cosy nights in, and opportunities to connect with other students, you can make this winter break a memorable one. So, bundle up, explore what Nottingham has to offer, and enjoy the festive season!
