✨ The Tradition of Chinese Lanterns (燈籠, Dēnglóng)
Join us to decorate your own Chinese lantern and learn about the cultural significance behind these glowing symbols of hope and celebration.
- The Festival of Lanterns: While lanterns are displayed throughout the New Year period, they are the focal point of the Lantern Festival (元宵節, Yuánxiāojié), which marks the fifteenth and final day of the Spring Festival celebrations.
- Symbolism of Light: Lanterns symbolize brightness, hope, and reunion. Lighting and displaying them is a way to pray for a smooth and prosperous future. Historically, they were also used as a practical light source and as a method to help people find their way home in the evening.
- Design and Meanings: Traditional Chinese lanterns are often red and round, representing perfection, completeness, and happiness. They are frequently adorned with calligraphy, landscapes, flowers, and the current year's zodiac animal, all conveying wishes for good fortune and peace.Puzzles: In some regions, people write riddles (猜燈謎, cāidēngmí) on the lanterns. Solving the riddle is seen as a sign of wisdom and brings good luck!
