🧧The Art of Jiǎnzhǐ (Paper Cutting)

  • What is Jiǎnzhǐ? This is one of China’s most important folk arts, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. It involves using scissors or sharp knives to cut intricate designs out of thin, often red, paper.
  • Symbolic Meaning: These cut outs are traditionally pasted onto windows, doors, and walls during festive occasions. The designs are almost always symbolic, expressing wishes for health, wealth, prosperity, and happiness. Common themes include auspicious animals (like the current year's zodiac), flowers (such as plum blossoms and peonies), and stylized characters that convey blessings.
  • The Colour Red: The use of bright red paper is paramount, as red symbolises good fortune, joy, and the power to ward off evil spirits, making the cu touts potent symbols of New Year blessing.
