Staying safe in Nottingham

Posted 2 months ago

It's easier than you think!

That's because Nottingham is already a very safe and welcoming city (we even won an award for it). That being said, it’s always wise to follow some general safety tips to ensure your time here is enjoyable and trouble-free. Here are some common-sense tips for staying safe in the city.

Stay aware of your surroundings

Whether you’re on campus or exploring the city, always stay aware of your surroundings. Avoid distractions like excessive phone use when walking alone, especially at night or when you're crossing the road!

Travel smart

Plan your route: Familiarise yourself with the best routes to and from your destinations. Sticking to well-lit, busy streets will generally be the safest option.

Public transport: Nottingham has an extensive public transport network. Use buses and trams to travel, especially late at night. Check timetables in advance to avoid long waits.

Taxi services: If you need to travel late at night, use reputable taxi services. We'd recommend Uber as your location will always be tracked through the app (as long as you have mobile data turned on).

Buddy system

Whenever possible, always do stuff with a group! Whether you’re heading to a late-night study session, a social event, or just walking home, having a friend or friends with you is always safer. You'll likely be caught in a situation where one of your friends tries to go on a solo adventure... as fun as that may sound, sticking together is always better!

Keep valuables secure

Bags and belongings: Keep your bags zipped and close to your body. Don’t leave your belongings unattended in public places, including libraries and cafes on campus.

Avoid flashing valuables: Avoid displaying expensive items like smartphones, laptops, or jewellery in public. Keep them secure and out of sight when not in use.

Stay informed

Campus security: Familiarise yourself with our campus security services. Save these numbers to your phone and then you can easily contact us if you need to: 0115 951 3013 or 0115 951 8888 (for emergencies ONLY).

Local news: Keep up-to-date with local news and alerts. Knowing what’s happening in the city can help you avoid any trouble or any areas where an incident is happening/has happened.

Lock up

Simple one but always lock your doors and windows when you leave your accommodation, even if it’s just for a short time. This applies to both university halls and private residences. Keep your key close by and watch out for any tailgating into certain areas (such as your accommodation).

Alcohol & drug awareness

If you’re drinking or doing any kind of drug, do so responsibly and make informed decisions. Know your limits and keep an eye on your drink at all times to prevent spiking. If you’re out with friends, look out for each other and make sure everyone gets home safely.
