How to keep yourself safe

Nottingham, with its vibrant nightlife and rich cultural scene, is a haven for students seeking to unwind and have a good night out. Nottingham City has recently been awarded the distinguished Purple Flag Status. This award signifies that the city is not just a destination for a fantastic night out but also prioritises the safety and wellbeing of its visitors and residents. In a nutshell, when you’re out in Nottingham, you’re in a place that is celebrated for offering a quality, safe, and diverse night-time experience.

However, a great night out also means staying safe and looking out for each other. Here are some essential tips for University of Nottingham students to ensure a fun, memorable, and safe night out in the city.

Plan Your Night

Research Your Venues: Nottingham boasts an array of pubs, clubs, and venues. Before heading out, do a bit of research. Check online reviews and talk to seniors about their recommendations. Knowing the vibe of the place beforehand can really set the tone for your night.

Pre-Book Your Ride: Always plan your return. Nottingham has reliable taxi services that you can pre-book. Apps like Uber or local taxi services with student discounts are great options. Never compromise on your way back, even if it means splurging a bit.

In partnership with DG Taxis, the UNICAB Scheme ensures no student is left stranded. If funds are low, simply provide your student ID, sign a form, and settle the fare the following day.

For a fixed price list, text UNICAB to 80818 or call +44 (0)115 9 500 500.

Public Transport Know-How: Familiarise yourself with the night bus schedules if you prefer public transport. It’s cheap and often a good choice, especially if you’re travelling in a group.

Enjoying your night

Drink Responsibly: Awareness of your alcohol limits is essential. Keep track of your intake and avoid substances that could put you at risk. Keep an eye on how much you and your friends are consuming. Don't feel pressured to keep up with others – everyone has different

Respectful Behaviour: Mutual respect is the foundation of a good night. Maintain personal boundaries and treat others kindly.

Buddy System: There's safety in numbers. Stay with your group, and if you must split, do so in pairs. Make sure everyone has someone watching out for them. You could set up a code word with your friends for times when someone is feeling uncomfortable or needs to exit a situation.

Be Observant: Keep an eye on not just your friends, but others too.  If you see someone who looks like they’re in an unsafe situation, help them if you can do so safely, or alert someone who can.

Shared Location: A simple share of your location with friends can ensure everyone's safety throughout the night.

Avoid Unlit or Isolated Areas: Stick to well-lit, populated routes when walking, especially late at night.

Nottingham has a team of dedicated of Street Pastors, who volunteer to patrol the city centre from 10pm-3am on weekends. These trained volunteers provide practical aid and first aid, help de-escalate violence, and distribute items like water and flip-flops to ensure party-goers enjoy their night safely.

In Case of Trouble

If an incident occurs within the university or around Nottingham, report it anonymously or speak to an advisor via Report & Support.

Direct emergency incidents to the police by calling 999, or 101 for non-emergencies.

Secure Personal Items: Consider anti-theft products for your belongings and stay alert in crowded spaces.

Lost Wallet or Phone: Keep a note of essential numbers somewhere other than your phone. If you lose your wallet or phone, contact your bank immediately to block your cards. Most clubs and pubs are accommodating in these situations and can assist you in getting help.

Watch Your Drink: Never leave your drink unattended. Consider using products like 'spikeys' to cover your bottle or can. Dizziness, confusion, or feeling excessively drunk could indicate drink spiking. If you or someone else experiences these symptoms, seek help immediately and report it to the police as soon as possible.

After the Night Out

Dehydration and Hangovers: Regular hydration throughout the night is crucial. A slow start the next day might be in order if you’re feeling the effects. Selfcare is especially important after a big night out.

Mental Health: Understand that it’s okay not to feel okay after a night out. Alcohol can affect your mood, so it’s important to check in with yourself and your friends. Should you need someone to talk to, Nightline offers confidential and non-judgmental support throughout the night 0115 951 4985.
