The 'Challenge 25' policy

Everything you need to know

It's not just to do with alcohol!

The Challenge 25 policy is a preventative strategy introduced in the UK to combat underage drinking by ensuring that alcohol is not sold to individuals under the legal drinking age of 18. It is also there to prevent the sale of any items which have a legal age requirement to an underage individual. This includes (but is not necessarily limited to):

  • Aerosol paint
  • Alcohol
  • Energy drinks
  • Corrosive substances
  • Fireworks and sparklers
  • Knives, axes and blades
  • Lottery tickets
  • Petrol and diesel
  • Tobacco

This policy requires anyone who looks under the age of 25 to present valid photographic identification proving they are at least 18 years old before purchasing the item. We understand this is probably very annoying getting ID'd for a Red Bull (an item you need to be 16 or older to purchase) on campus when most people there are students over the age of 20 - but it is the law and it must be followed!

So please respect any staff working at the shops on campus and in the local area, who are only doing their job when they request to see some identification. We'd recommend always carrying round some form of ID (driving license, passport, or any other form of ID with the PASS (Proof of Age Standards Scheme) hologram. That way there will be no issues and everything will go smoothly!
