How to deal with homesickness at uni

Many people feel homesick when moving to university

Moving to a new city, living in a new place, meeting new people, and eating instant noodles every day can be hard when you’re used to the comforts of home and familiar surroundings.

Don’t worry, homesickness is totally normal and it happens to a lot of students. Here are some tips to help you cope when you miss home.

Try something new

Uni is a great opportunity to explore new things. Join a society or a club that suits your interests. Learn a new skill or a hobby. Stay busy and involved with your coursework and extracurriculars. You’ll meet like-minded people and find new passions.

For the vast majority of people, university is a fresh start. So get out there and find the new you!

Get out of your room

Don’t lock yourself in your room all day. Hang out with your flatmates and make some new friends in your accommodation. Do some fun stuff together, like playing games, watching TV, or cooking a meal together. You’ll feel more at home and less isolated.

Even something simple like going for a walk on your own can feel like a big step forward. Luckily our campuses at Nottingham have plenty of picturesque sights and green spaces for you to enjoy on your walk.

Practice self care

Your wellbeing is important. Eat healthily, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. These habits will improve your mood, energy, and confidence. Plus, exercise releases endorphins, which are natural happy hormones.

It's easier said than done, but all of these things are fantastic life habits to develop and there's no better time to start than right now.

Stay in touch with friends and family

Use social media, phone calls, or video chats to keep up with your loved ones. A chat with your family and friends at home will always cheer you up.

Plus, they'd probably appreciate hearing from you too.

Make your room cosy

Bring some stuff from home that makes you feel comfy and happy. It could be a blanket, a teddy bear, or some photos. These will remind you that home is always with you.

Don't forget to start putting up photos and mementos from your time at uni too — the perfect blend of old and new.

Talk to someone

You’re not the only one who feels homesick. Many other students are going through the same thing. Reach out to your mates, tutors, or student support if you need someone to talk to. They will understand and help you deal with it.

You never know, your feelings and experience might be able to help others too.

Try to stay positive

It’s normal to have some bad days, but don’t let them ruin your mood. Focus on the good things about your new life and the opportunities ahead of you.

Whenever you feel down, do something that makes you laugh or smile. Set yourself some goals and celebrate your wins, no matter how big or small.

Moving to a new city and starting university can be both exciting and challenging. You might feel homesick, lonely, or overwhelmed at times. But don’t worry, you’re not alone. There are many ways to cope with these feelings and make the most of your university experience.
